Notes for JOHN ALBERT FORD:

26 Dec. 1912, Leader-Courier, Kingman KS.

"By mistake the following obituary funished The Leader-Courier by an intimate friend of the late John A. Ford was left out of the first few hundred copies of last week's issues and is there fore printed in the entire edition this week that all the friends of the deceased may receive paper with it in:

John Albert Ford, son of Washington and Elizabeth Ford, was born February 12, 1848, in Warren County, Indiana, and grew to manhood in that county. He moved to Illinois in 1870, and came to Kansas in 1880. He moved onto the place where he died in 1881, and lived there ever since. He departed this life December 10, 1912, aged 64 years, 9 months, and 28 days. Was joined in marriage to Malinda C. Sherrill, September 6th, 1870. To this union was born nine children, five girls and fours boys. Only one son and the firls, and his devoted wife are lift to mourn the loss: Mrs. Ella M. Wright of Zenda, Kansas, Jocie (sic) E. Shatell, near Spivey, Kansas, Vianna Stockdale, Bliss Oklahoma; Estella E. McNabb, of Nashville, Kansas; Nolia P. Hemphill of Spivey, Kansas, and J. Jesse Ford at home.

He also leaves four brothers and two sisters living: J Harvey Ford, of Ambia, Indiana; George W. Ford of West Lebanon, Indiana; Francis M. Ford of West Lebanon, Indiana; Herny J. Ford of Pence, Indiana; Mrs. Estella C. Thomson of Pence, Indiana; Mrs. Grace U. Reed of Nashville, Kansas.

Mr. Ford as a friend and neighbor was a loyal and upright man in his dealins and no one ever came to him for help and went away without finding it. He was a man that every body liked, both young and old, and he vever forgot a face and every one was his friend. He was a true, devoted husband and father, and prided himself in helping those who came to him in need, it mattered not whether high or lowly. We know of no person that had as many friends as he, and he never mand an enemy in his lifetime.

The funeral services were held at the home, being conducted by the Odd Fellows, of which he was a member, having belonged to the order over 22 years. Rev. H.T. Purcell of Spivey preached teh funeral sermon, and interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.

The accident which caused Mr. Ford's death is the most peculiar that has ever happened out here. It being a tree that he had planted himself some 30 years ago, which he was cutting down preparatory to have made into lumber to build a new house. Probably no one can call to mind an incident of this particular kind.

The funeral was the largest ever held in this neighborhood , the proscession being just on solid mile long. There were about 700 people in attendance as friend of the deceased.

Being among the first settlers in Kingman County, Mr. Ford found ample opportunity to indulge his bigheartedness toward the deseving poor, and no one in destress ever called on him in vain. The night was never too dark or the unfortunate neighbor too far away for John Ford to fail to respong promptly to any call of distress. "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my children" he will find many blessings laid up for him. He shone the brightest when he could do the most for the poor man in distress lost one he could always turn to when John Ford closed his eyes in death. Another of those who bore the burden in the heat of teh day has passed away.
